<\/a>The challenge: Different parts lists = time and costs<\/h3>

Bills of materials have always clearly and reliably defined the components of every type of product. At every position, countless characteristics of the individual components and entire assemblies accumulate in connected ERP systems, from material properties to supply chains and price information.<\/p>

<\/a>What does this mean for purchasing and controlling?<\/h3>

But what if different production steps produce different parts lists, some of which overlap and some of which complement each other? This poses a number of problems for purchasing and determining requirements - and therefore for any price calculation - that should not be underestimated: Errors can only be avoided with thorough and time-consuming care. And controlling is also faced with immense tasks, particularly with large products and extensive product ranges. And: Which parts list is the leading one if none is complete?<\/p>

<\/a>The old practice at Mue <\/em>Tec \u2013 Manual merging of parts lists<\/h3>

In its complex manufacturing environment, the company Mue <\/em>Tec relies on the global industry standard EPLAN P8<\/em>. Designers develop and model the products using Autodesk Inventor<\/em>. An undesirable result: multiple parts lists, none of which completely represent the product, but which \u2013 when kept next to each other \u2013 create redundancies. The parts lists are merged manually, which of course involves a certain susceptibility to errors and thus inevitably increases time and costs.<\/p>

<\/a>The new practice at Mue <\/em>Tec \u2013 Automated merging of parts lists<\/h3>

As Operations Manager, J\u00fcrgen Ziegler is responsible for the requirements engineering of the PDM solution, which is intended to automate the process of merging the parts lists:<\/p>

„Bei den ganzen unterschiedlichen CAD- und ERP-Systemen sowie den unterschiedlichen elektrotechnischen Systemen am Markt, ist es nicht einfach, hier zu einer L\u00f6sung zu finden. Bestenfalls mit einem Anbieter, der unterst\u00fctzt, indem er auch \u00fcber seinen eigenen Tellerrand hinausblickt.“<\/em><\/p>

<\/a>Finally found the right partner with GAIN Software<\/h3>

In a detailed market research, Ziegler and his team take a close look at various PDM and ERP systems. It quickly becomes apparent that a fully automated merging of parts lists can only be implemented in a rudimentary manner by almost all providers.<\/p>

„In fast allen Systemen muss man sich die Teile mehr oder weniger zusammenklicken und in die St\u00fcckliste ziehen. Nach und nach kommt man so zwar auch zur elektromechanischen St\u00fcckliste, aber eben nicht auf automatisiertem Wege. \u00dcberdies w\u00fcnschten wir einen st\u00e4ndigen Transfer aktueller Artikelnummern zu unserem ERP-System. <\/em><\/p>

Und da kommt GAIN Software mit GAIN Collaboration ins Spiel. In diesem PDM-System k\u00f6nnen unterschiedliche St\u00fccklisten \u00fcber Regeln zusammengef\u00fchrt werden. Daf\u00fcr wurden seitens GAIN Software einige Funktionalit\u00e4ten im Kern erweitert. \u00dcber die neue Funktion „Update Item BOM“ erfolgt die Zusammenf\u00fchrung der nativen CAD- und ECAD-St\u00fccklisten in eine Artikel-basierte, elektromechanische St\u00fcckliste. Und diese f\u00fchrt das PDM-System dann vollautomatisch unserem ERP-System zu. Das PDM System hat quasi die Masterdaten inne, die nat\u00fcrlich auch kommerzieller Natur sein k\u00f6nnen.“<\/em><\/p>

<\/a>The implementation \u2013 How was the automated solution realized<\/h2>

<\/a>Article master data and article numbers as a connecting link between the systems<\/h3>

Article numbers are usually assigned using a number generator in an ERP system. At Mue <\/em>Tec, the article number is the feature with which objects are uniquely referenced across all systems involved. It therefore makes sense to have these generated by a PDM system, which manages the designers' CAD files and is therefore located right at the beginning of product development.<\/p>

<\/a>Rules in the PDM system determine the manner of merging<\/h3>

In cooperative, detailed work, the engineers from Mue <\/em>Tec and the GAIN Software team defined how a robust electromechanical parts list could be generated from GAIN Collaboration. The primary questions here:<\/p>
